Don’t You Forget About MeKaren Miranda Augustine & Ilene Sova
In Don’t You Forget About Me, Karen Miranda Augustine and Ilene Sova explore the significance of female icons in outsider and mainstream culture through two series of portraits on women of the night and women who have ruled our nightlife. Posited together, the artists propose a shift in how we view, value, and define female self-possession in our communities and media.
Painted Love: Requiems for Salacious Sex Queens is a series of mixed-media portraits of deceased, sex industry-involved women by Karen Miranda Augustine. The series defies polarizing understandings of women who participate in the industry and the broad trajectory their lives had reached.
What Are They Looking At? is a series of painted portraits on glass of female pop icons from the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s by Ilene Sova. The series explores the ways her subjects challenged gender diversity, shadeism, power, and sexuality — shifting perceptions of the female performer.
Karen Miranda Augustine is a Canadian artist and writer whose projects ride on the confluence of sex, pop culture, spirituality, and the underground.
Ilene Sova uses portrait painting to reference social justice themes. She is the founder of the Feminist Art Conference and was featured in Toronto’s first TEDxWomen.
