RuPaul: Evolution of an Icon – Part I (Daniels Spectrum)

John Simone

Thirty years before RuPaul won her Emmy, and six years before her break-out hit in Larry Tee’s Supermodel, she had already established herself as one of the top hosts and performers in the New York club scene. Her look was never static, always changing and mutating. She was wild and wacky before she was a slinky supermodel.

Simone’s work builds on a fascination with RuPaul’s fierce confidence and charisma, promoting her fashion glamour as a vehicle of authentic personal liberation. She is living proof of a creative space between the extremes of masculine and feminine, a space where everyone can explore the dimensions of their true selves. RuPaul expresses her vitality best in her own words: “You’re born naked; everything else is drag.”

These works are split between Daniels Spectrum and the Nuit Rose Art Bar.
